• Abstinence. Abstinence is a complete avoidance of sexual activity so that the woman will not get pregnant. Among the natural methods, abstinence is the safest since the husband refrains from touching his wife.
• Non penetrative sexual activity. Non penetrative sexual activity is a love making without intercourse. This method is done by caressing and stimulating the sensitive part of husband and wife.
• Withdrawal. Also called coitus interruptus. The erect penis is drawn out from the vagina prior to ejaculation. This kind of contraception method was used thousands of years ago. Withdrawal is not one hundred percent safe that a woman will not get pregnant. There is an estimated7% of women got pregnant in withdrawal because men sometimes experience a pre ejaculatory syndrome where the sperm passes through the fluid.
• Natural Family Planning method. Also called rhythmic method. The couple avoids sexual intercourse when the woman is on its fertile period. Fertility in women lasts for four days subsequently after ovulation period, when the mature ovum move to the uterus via the fallopian tube. There are three ways to know if the woman is on its fertile period,
o Calendar Method. The woman has to record the length of her menstrual period for the period of at least six months. The woman has to record the first day of her fertility period as well as the last day of her fertility period. Here is how to do it, from those six months records, get the shortest and the longest menstrual period you had, the longest cycle should be subtracted by 11 and the shortest cycle is subtracted by 18. If for example your longest period is 31, subtract 31 by 11 you get 20. If your shortest period is 20 you subtract 20-18=2. So your safest period is between 2 to 20.
o Cervical mucus method. Also called ovulation. The woman has to speculate her fertile period by observing the cervical mucus in the vagina. When you feel your mucus and it is clear, elastic, watery, means you are fertile. But when you feel your vaginal mucus and it is sticky, cloudy and bulk then you are safe for sexual activity. Dry and no mucus at all is also safe for coitus.
o Symptothermal method. The fertility of a woman is measured by the use of thermometer. When a woman’s temperature is above 37. Let’s say, 37.1 to 37.4 means a woman is fertile. Sometimes you will feel it by just touching the woman from her skin when it is hot or not. |
