During my pre school days, I won’t get a day without sleeping during mid day. My mom would see to it that I sleep mid day everyday. In the past, it is believe that sleeping during day time will help child to grow faster. The myth was brought until today. Some parents think this way. But is it really true?
Sleep is one way of resting both physical and mental activity. When a child sleep, his body temperature tends to decrease a bit. In fact it is not only his body temperature that decreases but all of his vital signs. Like for example his breathing, blood pressure and heart rate. The only thing that never decreases in functioning is the brain. Our brain is always active regardless when we are awake or sleeping.
Sleep is important to adults as well as to children, though not necessarily during mid day. There are two hypotheses why we need sleep:
• One reason is healing. When we sleep, (not only children) our mind and body revitalize, our lost cells are restored and we feel active again after a long days work, or after a child takes his toil in playing and running.
• Sleep is Adaptive. Sleep gives you energy to cope up with daily activities. The number of hours you spend sleeping in a day, would determine how much you will have energy for the next day.
Sleep is important (could it be day time or night time) to both adults and children for some biological function. Children who lack sleep significantly develop mood swing compared to those children who sleep lavishly, aside from the fact that when a child lacks sleep his immune system is quite affected. When sleep deprivation continues to your child, he is easily gets affected with cough and colds, this is because his immune system cannot provide the necessary immunity his body needs. |
