Many an exciting mother would wonder what to expect from her baby on its 6th month. Barely half-a year on this world, many things can be expected of him. His birth weight has doubled at this stage.
She would be struck with awe as how this marvel of God’s creation utters Momma and Dada. The child now starts to make clear babbles to the delight of his parents. He learns it by mimicking the sounds he hears. It is practically the baby’s first attempt to speak. This is a very important aspect of his development. And that makes it distinctly human. Language separates humans from animals. Research studies show that even babies born deaf babble on the sixth month, although it may practically stop on the later months.
Baby’s psycho motor development is now noticeable. It begins to manipulate objects he sees with his more developed eyesight, and excitedly put them to its mouth as it everything he sees and picks were food for him. Pincer grasp as it called, it is a time for babysitters and mothers to have watchful eyes to safeguard the child from swallowing small objects.
Parents can go home to their 6th month old child lifting his arms to be picked up, making the bonding moments more playful and exciting. It is because his muscles are developing enabling him to roll over, even sit up while being supported.
Another milestone with baby on its 6th month is its readiness to taste human solid food like well-cooked smashed veggies in addition to the cereals. Of course, it best to start with mild tasting vegetables, and those which are easy to digest, avoiding meat until later taking into consideration that the baby’s digestive system has not fully developed just yet. Mothers who breastfeed their babies may decide to start weaning the child at this stage. It is also for mothers to train their 6th month old baby to drink liquids from a cup, many of which are designed for babies to sip through the cup’s several holes. Along with the start of his weaning stage, it is also good to minimize the use of pacifier at the age of 6 months.
At home, mothers can use high chairs to let their babies sit like adults. Some restaurants and fast food chains may offer high chairs to which mothers can let their baby sit down. This can be an extension of their training to sit as adults in the real world.
The baby’s sleeping pattern changes at age 6 months. He takes at least two naps or short sleep during the day at this age sleep for the majority of the night. It is also interesting for couples to learn that at this stage, they can rekindle their romance at this stage when the baby is generally ready to move him into a full size crib, if not his own room.  |
